Battle & Village Lions Club Go Kart GP

This was the seventh annual Go Kart GP staged by Battle & Villages Lions Club for the benefit of LIBRA.

The event consisted of a two hour endurance race in the morning and another one in the afternoon, in which the top three teams from each session competed in a frantic & thrilling “Drive out” for the ultimate prize – THE LIBRA TROPHY.

Perhaps fittingly in LIBRA’S 30th anniversary year it was a team from Woolwich & Greenwich Lions Club that won the trophy because it was thirty years ago when the then District Governor, Ian Scott Mackensie, made his official visit to their club that he identified the desperate need for support for research into blood disorders at Kings College Hospital.

DG Ian came back to the Lions Clubs in District 105 SE asking whether they could help and the rest is history – 30 years of it – help, we certainly have – we can be proud that with the assistance of Lions Clubs throughout the British Isles and Ireland, that we have helped to move research at Kings College Hospital on to a level where there is a real expectation of a major breakthrough in the treatment of blood disorders.

Many blood diseases such a leukaemia have become manageable and survivable but future treatment will probably be closely linked to cell therapy, research into which, major progress is being made.
