The Lions Hospice, based in Northfleet, opened in 1992 and cares for adults with life shortening illnesses in Gravesham, Dartford, Swanley and the surrounding villages. The Hospice has a 12 bed inpatient unit and cares for more than 300 patients a year. Patients stay for two weeks on average, returning home if possible. The Hospice also offers day therapy for up to twenty patients at a time.
November 2007 was a landmark date for the future of palliative care in North Kent and the London Borough of Bexley, when two well established charities, the Ellenor Foundation and the Lions Hospice, joined forces to become a single organisation - Ellenor Lions Hospices. Ellenor Lions Hospices will provide seamless care for adults and children with cancer and other life threatening illnesses through all stages of their illnesses.
The two charities, which complement each other in terms of the care they offer, have been working closely together with great success for the last three years. The purpose of the merger is to ensure the continuing development of excellence in hospice care for all patients and their families. By sharing skills and concentrating resources, Ellenor Lions Hospices can offer the highest standards of specialist care to patients, whatever their age, whether at home or in the hospice.
The Ellenor and the Lions already share a team of doctors who provide the specialist medical care at home, in hospital and in the Lions Hospice. During the patient's illness they may need to receive their care in a variety of settings, and joint working makes this easier, providing a more seamless service.
