Lions relief efforts in Haiti
Lions Clubs in the British Isles have already donated £209,244, with a further €125,698 from Ireland.
Lions Clubs from across the British Isles and Ireland have continued their busy fund raising and making donations to our Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) to provide immediate response aid to the people of Haiti.
Donations through “Lions Hope for Haiti” project with Lions and LCIF working together have now realised the superb total of US $ 4,200,000, thanks to your special fund raising activities which total US $ 505,000 to date and already deposited into LCIF’s fund.
The on-site Committee of Lions Leaders from Haiti, the Dominican Republic and neighbouring countries are closely monitoring the current and immediate local problems and needs requiring Lions help, as well as the longer term re-construction needs of the population. It is likely the future rehabilitation project will be centred around the provision of a new school and an ophthalmic clinic.
Our own MD105 British Isles & Ireland Lions Disaster Response Committee has submitted its proposals to provide a major rehabilitation education or medical project in conjunction with the plans of LCIF and the Lions local Committee. We are in constant liaison with LCIF to identify the exact nature of our identifiable part of the rehabilitation plan. Full details will be announced at MD Convention at Leeds including the overall donations target to build on our current total.
The MD Committee have also made proposals to the Council of Governors to establish a Standing Committee to be activated in the event of any future major incident or disaster, whether in the British Isles & Ireland, Europe or around the World. It is obvious from past experiences that we are also likely to experience major incidents, whether natural or criminal, throughout MD105. We need to be proactive rather than reactive when confronted with these situations. The Committee proposals also provide for Districts to liaise with the local Authorities in the planning stage and to prepare a coordinated response in conjunction with other organisations in the voluntary sector.
