What's new in Life Skills?

Lions Clubs have worked with TACADE to produce a counselling programme for bereaved children within schools.

Lion Margaret Riley of District 105C is a Macmillan Children's Nurse who has written an original text for a bereavement resource based on her experiences. Educational research shows that when children are bereaved while at school learning potential can be considerably damaged unless they are properly counselled. From this text, Tacade, our Life Skills partners, have developed a very professional resource 'Life Changes' written by Erica Brown, Vice President of The Acorns Hospice in Birmingham and Head of Pastoral Care at Birmingham Children's Hospital which will be available from June. This resource will enable teachers to counsel affected children quickly while at school and our Life Skills Officers are making schools aware of this valuable programme.

Tacade are to produce a new anti-smoking programme provisionally entitled 'Up in Smoke' . Despite an overall reduction in smoking there is still an unacceptably high level of secondary school children who smoke. This programme will be designed to reduce this. The estimated cost of production will be £30,000 which will be met, hopefully, by Lions funding and commercial sponsorship. An appeal to Lions Clubs has been approved and details will appear shortly in 'Lion' magazine.
