Music competition winner 2009

Following our European success with violinist Sophie Rosa in 2008, nine candidates assembled at the Birmingham Conservatoire on the 4th April to compete for the honour of leading MD105 into the European Music Competition for 2009. The instrument this year was the trombone and the European final will be held in Tampere, Finland from the 17th to the 19th September.

This year's winner was Stephen Sykes from Shepton Mallet in Somerset sponsored by the Glastonbury and Street Club of District 105SW.

Second was Christopher Day, our first ever Music Competition entrant from Ireland, sponsored by the Newry Club. Third was Tom Berry sponsored by the Bolton club of District 105BN. Given the great tradition of brass band music in the North of England it's not difficult to see that one of the winners was a Lancastrian.

The picture shows Stephen being presented with his trophy by Lion Elizabeth Jones, the wife of Past District Governor Ian Jones (2001 -2002) one of the earliest stalwarts of the MD105 music Competition. They are flanked by Council Chairman Bryan Riley to the right and PDG Eric Roberts the MD Cultural and Community Affairs Officer on the left.

Time moves exceeding fast and we are already on the look out for candidates for the 2010 competition. The instrument is the classical guitar and the list of music to be played is shown here. Candidates must play the ‘Imposed Piece’ and one other piece to be selected from the ‘Repertoire list’.

It would be a huge boost in this next year if we could have a candidate from all 13 Districts in the British Isles and Ireland.
